EOW: means End of Watch.  This is the day that these officers and fire fighters lost their lives in the line of duty.

Lieutenant Bryon Johnson Jan 16, 1975—Sept 24, 2007

Monday, September 24, 2007, was marked as one of the saddest days in the history of Sedgwick County Fire District 1. One of the District’s finest, 32-year-old Lieutenant Bryon Johnson was killed while fighting a grass fire in the 9400 Block of South Broadway. Lieutenant Johnson will be remembered as a dedicated family man, exceptional firefighter and all-around good guy. On the job, Bryon strove for excellence in all aspects of his career and someday hoped to become a member of the District’s Fire Prevention Division and eventually fire marshal. In pursuit of this goal, Lieutenant Johnson had just been accepted into the prestigious Executive Fire Officer program conducted by the National Fire Academy in Emmetsburg, Maryland. He was one of the youngest applicants ever accepted into the academy’s program. Bryon Johnson left behind a wife, two sons, ages 10 and 12, and many friends and family members.

Police Officer Travis P. Murphy

Arizona

End of Watch: Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Age: 29
Tour of Duty: 4 years, 6 months
Badge Number: 8474

Incident DetailsCause of Death: Gunfire
Date of Incident: Wednesday, May 26, 2010
Weapon Used: Rifle; Automatic
Suspect Info: Apprehended

Officer Travis P. Murphy was shot and killed when he confronted a suspect who had fled the scene of a shots fired call earlier in the night.

Officers in a neighboring precinct responded to a report of shots fired. When they arrived, the perpetrator had fled, but they transmitted a description of the suspect's vehicle over their department radio. Several minutes later, dispatchers received reports that a man was seen attempting to hide a vehicle under a tarp at a vacant home. Officer Murphy, along with several officers, responded to the scene and started searching for the man on foot.

Officer Murphy encountered the suspect and was shot 10 times in the legs and lower abdomen. Other officers immediately placed him in a patrol car and took him to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds a short time later.

The suspect was taken into custody after being found hiding in a nearby shed.

Officer Murphy had served with the Phoenix Police Department for four and a half years. He is survived by his wife, 2-year-old daughter, and 2-week-old son.

Many people don't realize the risk that your officers and fire fighter take each and everyday they go to work, here on the soil of our own country.
